Hello, Internet and WELCOME to Retro Nick Relics! The show where I scour the Internet, to find all the weird stuff YOU have never played and give my 2-bit opinion on these 8 through 32-bit relics. The year is 2042. "In the moonlight, New San Francisco sparkles like a chunk of cubic zirconium. An island of hollow beauty surrounded by a red sea of radiation. Five million souls drowning in gamma rays. Some lucky people have a natural Immunity to genetic mutation caused by the radiation. I'm one of them. Most of them live in the new city, but I don't. I live among the unlucky souls, the mutants and the destitute in the wreckage of Old San Francisco. My name's Tex Murphy -- I'm a private detective. Or at least I used to be. Since my marriage hit the rocks, I haven't done much of anything. I went out tonight for the first time in a week, but all I ended up doing was spending the last of my money on a bottle of cheap bourbon. Now it's past midnight and I'm starting out of the window of my office on the second floor of the Ritz Hotel. Just like me, the Ritz used to be something. Now it's just another grimy building in the rundown part of town. And I'm almost out of bourbon." Try all you want, but there just isn't a better introduction to 1994's $2,000,000 interactive movie than Tex Murphy's monologue from Under a Killing Moon, the sequel the Martian Memorandum, and the first interactive movie in the Tex Murphy Adventure game series. At its core, Under a Killing Moon is a point and click adventure game, but it stands out as an example of full motion Video (FMV), done right, and validates an entire genre of games that most people would turn their noses up at. It seamlessly blends conversations, puzzles, cutscenes, and exploration through Tex's world, presented from a first-person perspective in polygonal 3D in 1994 WITHOUT ray casting! Under a Killing Moon turned 30 this year, and-while its video and textures are grainier than I remember, you can still see evidence of its enduring legacy and pioneering storytelling techniques on many games today. Every great story has at three acts, and this is the final part of Rick's blood-soaked journey through Hell in 3 houses. This time, he faces off against THE EVIL ONE, who has kidnapped NOT ONLY Jennifer, but their only child, David. Unlike Rick's last two brushes with the insane Dr. West At Splatterhouse and Shin Splatterhouse, the Evil One is playing for keeps, and will kill or alter Rick's family forever if he can't make it in time! Simple combat gets the boot as alternating paths and an all new beat-em-up engine are introduced, to help Splatterhouse 3 stand out in the original trilogy of games. Rick Taylor stars in this rare silent film about a man just trying to find his dame. However, tomfoolery ensues as he encounters some misunderstood miscreants, and they endeavor to put the "splatter" in Splatterhouse. This film was discovered in the RNR archives JUST in time for Halloween! Every artist has their magnum opus. Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey; Betthoven's Symphony No. 9; and Sonic Team's Nights into Dreams, the killer app for the Sega Saturn that-despite the buzz it generated on its release in 1996, has fallen somewhat into obscurity with a handful of appearances in other Sega games, and a mediocre sequel on a mediocre console. Sonic Team wanted to break away from Sonic the Hedgehog games and try their hand at creating something new. While Nights isn't the most interesting character they ever created, the game that bears their namesake might just be the closest thing we'll ever get to perfect. Retro Nick breaks down almost every aspect of this classic, and tells YOU how to get the highest scores and have the most fun with this hidden treasure. If you want to try Nights and DON'T have a Sega Saturn, you're in luck! Just fire up your Playstation 3 OR go onto Steam and download the HD version of the PS2 port, which also features the models from the excellent Sega Saturn version. Back in May, I endeavored to find the worst game on the Sega Megadrive, or Genesis as we call it here in GOD'S country, and thought I had a pretty good first go with Osomatsu-kun: Nonsense Theater, or おそ松くん はちゃめちゃ劇場 as it's known in its native Japan. But, as the Internet is want to do, someone challenged my accusation and offered up a list of 5 of their own candidates for the biggest blight in the Genesis library. Top among their suggestions was Sword of Sodan! A hack and slasher ported over from the Amiga, that should have stayed there. Watch as Retro Nick struggles to do even the most basic actions, and eventually give up on trying to save the kingdom of what's-its-nuts. Sure it's bad, but is it, THE WORST GAME ON THE SEGA GENESIS? People were so stoked for my review of Splatterhouse on the Turbografx-16 that I had to go BACK, to the mansion! Or rather, the backup mansion or "Shin Splatterhouse" as it's known in Japan, because I'm reviewing Splatterhouse 2! Or Splatterhouse Part 2, as it's known in its native Japan. Rick returns 3 months following his adventure in the West mansion, to try and rescue his girlfriend, Jennifer. The terror masks beckons him, promising that she lives and that he must find her in the void through a portal hidden in a secret second house, or Shin Splatterhouse, located on an island in the middle of a lake near the ruins of the West Mansion. 1988’s Splatterhouse for the Turbografx-16 is a wild ride, but without a password system, things can get frustrating when you keep on dying. That’s where this level select code comes in handy! When you hit the run button on the title screen and the opening cinematic starts, press Select 3 times, followed by pressing and holding down-left on the D-pad; then press button 1 or 2 and presto chango! The level select screen appears. Now you can perfect the Shotgun shuffle on Stage 3, after Biggie Man gives you pelnty of free chainsaw rides. For added fun you can also access a secret sound test from the same menu. At the level select screen, press and hold the select button. After a second or two, the stage select will become a sound test menu. Now you can jam to the game’s excellent soundtrack, and play around with its various sound effects. When you're done, just hold the select button once more to go back to the stage select menu. These cheats work for both the original version of Splatterhouse and the Romhack, "Splatterhouse Chrome."
