Though he eventually starred in a driving game of his own, Sonic’s first soiree into a new genre was Sonic Spinball for the Sega Genesis in 1993.

As the game opens Sonic and Tails are on their way to Robotnik’s latest stronghold, the “Veg-O-Fortress”. Their plane is shot down tossing Sonic into the ocean below. When we next see the heroic hedgehog, he is entering the fortress’ “Pinball Defense System”. Sure it’s a little unusual but Robotnik has always been a little quirky to say the least.

As it turns out, the crazy idea of a Pinball Defense System is surprisingly effective as Sonic’s trek through it is an arduous one indeed. The system consists of four stages, each containing three to five Chaos Emeralds that must be collected to unlock the stage’s boss chamber, where Sonic goes head to head against one of Robotnik’s mechanical creations. This is said much more simply than accomplished, however.

The game provides surprisingly little guidance and progressing isn’t quite as straightforward as traditional Sonic fare. I began my first game with the mindset that I was about the play a game of pinball. This quickly left me feeling dissatisfied as first chamber of the table to which I was given access is relatively small and became stale rather quickly. After bouncing around for several minutes I was able to unlock a new section of the table where the first Emerald was visible but not clearly accessible. After a few additional flicks of the flippers I was transported back to the first section of table with little idea of what I should have done differently or how I came to find myself back in the first chamber.

That brings me to my first issue with this title. While the tables themselves contain many rooms and chambers, only a small portion of the one you are currently in fits on screen. This greatly hinders your ability to determine your objectives and the inability to see a larger portion of the table detracts a bit from the “pinball feel” if you will. After about 15 minutes or so I had somewhat successfully explored the first stage but failed to collect even a single emerald before using the last of my three allotted lives. I quickly started up another game determined to actually progress in the game and wanting to test out a few of the visual options available in the port.

Upon beginning the new game I toggled through the pixel smoothing and played around a bit with the aspect ratio, changing it from 4:3 to 16:9. I personally recommend playing in the native 4:3 because the stretch view feels a little too distorted. The pixel smoothing does help with crispness and color on HDTVs but using it detracts from the nostalgia. While sampling the display in its various forms was able unlock each of the chambers again and managed to collect some of the stages Chaos Emeralds. Grabbing the emeralds was surprisingly fulfilling and compelled me to continue playing just a little longer each time. After the final emerald was collected I made my way to Robotnik’s chamber to battle the first boss. The battle as you would expect, involved bouncing around the chamber and landing on the boss to deal damage. The catch is you have to do it while avoiding various warps that send you back to the stages earlier chambers. Unfortunately, I wasn’t entirely successful in the latter and frustratingly had to work my way back through the stage to deliver one final hit to the boss. After completing the more traditional pinball bonus stage I was quickly killed in the second level during the “exploration phase” similarly to my first game on the initial stage. At that point, I had had enough for the day.

When I first encounter Sonic Spinball in a Sega Channel Kiosk at my local Sears as a child, I immediately added it to my Christmas list. Unfortunately that childhood jubilance for the title has worn off. Sonic Spinball fails in the same way that a lot of musical theatre does. Just as better options can be found individually for both music and theatre, there are stronger entries in the Sonic franchise for traditionalist and more realistic pinball games available for pinball buffs. With all that said however, it is still a serviceable title if you have a strong sense of nostalgia or are a true blue fan of the protagonist.
