My first experience with Gain Ground came a few years back when I picked up Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. I’m not sure what possessed me to try out this particular game because I had never heard of it before and the ambiguous title did little to detail what kind of gameplay I could expect. Whatever the reason, I’m certainly glad I gave this one a chance.

As I understand it, the convoluted story involves some sort of military AI training program, the titular “Gain Ground”, going haywire trapping many of Earth’s elite soldiers within its confines. You play as the three remaining recruits responsible for rescuing the others and dismantling the rogue AI. None of this is explained in-game but that’s more or less irrelevant because the ridiculous premise serves only as a backdrop for the game’s simple yet surprisingly deep gameplay.

To progress through the game’s stages and save your fellow super soldiers, you must either dispatch every enemy on screen or guide each of your characters through to the exit. Sounds simple enough, right? Here’s where the depth comes in. Gain Ground sports surprisingly clever level design that incorporates enemies with varied speed attack ranges positioned in tactical locations such as on top of walls or behind barriers. Each of the game’s twenty playable characters comes equipped with a primary weapon which fires at ground level and only in the direction the character is facing, as well as one secondary weapon which can be used tactically for tasks such as firing over walls or strafing. The catch is you begin with only three of those twenty characters. In order to increase your roster, you must rescue additional characters by walking over them on the map and escorting them to the exit without being hit by enemies. This necessitates foresight and planning because once a character exits the map, it cannot return. Gain Ground also adds a few additional wrinkles in that a single hit kills your character and if a defeated character isn’t rescued, without the next character dying no less, it is lost permanently. Each level must also be completed within 200 seconds. If you fail to do so, you can choose continue the game but your character roster is reduced to the original trio, which can more or less equate to Game Over depending your progress through the game and which weapon types are necessary to complete the coming stages.

Gain Ground is a surprisingly deceptively deep title that is definitely worth your time. It provides a simple yet deep experience that controls surprisingly well despite the slow character speed. The game pits a wide variety of characters with an impressive arsenal against myriad obstacles and enemies, forcing you to consider even minor details such as which weapons you need in what order and even whether to select a right or left handed character. If you’re short on time and willing to use save states, Gain Ground can even be experienced in short busts due to its design and inclusion of 50 small maps rather than 8-10 longer time consuming levels. Definitely check this one out. Availability shouldn’t be a problem as the title has been released on the Genesis and Master System as well as the TG-16, Virtual Console, and is part of the earlier referenced Ultimate Genesis Collection.
