Back in 1996, the N64 was just coming out and our TurboGrafx-16 and Genesis were beginning to show their age. My brother and I lobbied for a new system, and Super Mario 64 just looked so dazzling, even though the PC games we were playing at that time looked better. We didn’t care. It was Mario. It was free-roaming 3D. We had to have it.

As the weeks following the console’s release began to pass, they were so hard to come by that it was becoming clear that there was no chance of securing the coveted magic box (despite only launching with a whopping 2 games). This lead my father to consider the other 2 boxes: Sony’s Playstation and Sega’s Saturn. At the time, Sony was a newcomer, the Playstation looked weird (shapes on buttons?), and we were grounded in tradition so to speak. After some consideration, it was clear we needed a Saturn, if not simply for the Sega name, then for “inevitable” Sonic Xtreme. We could play Street Fighter Alpha 2 and the newly released NiGHTS into Dreams while we waited for Sonic Xtreme to come out.

Well, everyone knows how the Sonic Xtreme story ended, but few still talk about what was possibly the best game released that generation, NiGHTS. The first time we played the game, we didn’t really know what to think of it. Without reading the instructions, the game feels alien; starting you with the free-roaming sensibilities of Mario 64, and then locking you into a two-dimensional plane while somehow delivering the sensation of free flight. The fluidity of the controls and whimsical imagery won us over almost immediately, but most people didn’t “get it.” NiGHTS was an unproven property and seemingly spawned a new genre of scrolling acrobatics and arial trick style gameplay, but the object wasn’t immediately obvious, and there was very little narrative to guide you. Once you understood that the game was about clearing the map as fast as possible and then racking up points in bonus time, it became an exhilarating thrill to try and top each other’s scores, build bigger and bigger links, and advance through the game.

The story, which is only told by 3 short, speechless cinematics in the beginning of the game (1 main and 1 for each character), is basically about 2 children, Elliot and Claris, who are dealing with self doubt when faced by seemingly insurmountable personal struggles: Elliot’s basketball game against a skilled rival, and Claris’s stage audition. After the cinematics, you don’t really think about the story too much until you unlock Twinseeds…

The final stage in the game is the city in which both Claris and Eliot live, and is the only stage the two characters share. Armed only with the “ideya of courage,” they run to the gazebo holding the magical NiGHTS as they had done so many times before, until ZAP! A ghostly image of Wizeman the Wicked fills the screen with a flash, and your character is hurtled off into the night sky, stopped by a small floating island. Now, as a teenage boy, I was stuck on this platform for perhaps longer than I should have been. I utterly missed the point of the “Course 1” signs that were conveniently placed within sight of where I had landed, and wracked my brain for a good 10 minutes trying to figure out how I was supposed to cross the seemingly insurmountable chasm between me and NiGHTS. Without being able to combine with NiGHTS, it seemed hopeless. That’s when it hit me. Throughout the entire game, Claris and Eliot have had two things in common: crushing self doubt, and a reliance on NiGHTS to give them flight and help them rush through each mare and nightmare. But, like children moving away from their parents, Claris and Eliot must face the same harsh truth that the player is facing: NiGHTS can’t always be there to help you.

This moment may be the smartest piece of storytelling that has ever been attempted in this medium. The simple act of walking up to a ledge and staring down through the clouds into the tiny lights of the city below perfectly sums up the entire point of the game and puts you into the same gut-wrenching situation that both main characters are facing. You’re left with a choice: stay planted on your safe pedestal and let the world pass you by until someone else comes along to save it; or walk up to the ledge, take a deep breath, and take a leap of faith. The camera looks down through the clouds as you vanish into the distance, holds for a beat, and then your character spins up into the sky triumphantly, flying without the aid of NiGHTS.

I feel like the word “emotional” gets slapped onto a lot of the narrative-heavy tear jerkers that are coming out today, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt the way I did playing NiGHTS playing any other game. This moment forces you to consider your options and jump headlong into the unknown, just like some of the most important decisions real life forces us to make. The feeling you get from this is so brilliant, because it was achieved without using heavy-handed narrative or forcing you to sit through a ton of cutscenes that do little more than distract from the gameplay. This moment, and the entire game leading up to it, tell a more interesting and compelling story than some RPGs that have novels worth of text in the codex alone, because you’re actually becoming involved the moment you’re left to make that decision.

This is part of the reason I find its sequel on the Wii so patently offensive, but that’s a story for another time. The lesson we can all take away from NiGHTS into Dreams is this. Fortune favors the bold, and nearly anything is possible if you have a little faith.
