RetroNick: Games Collector // Episode 28: Playstation, Nintendo’s Biggest Mista...
Episode 28: Playstation, Nintendo’s Biggest Mistake
Recorded on: 06 February 2013
Steve returns from Kuwait to join Nick & Ben as they talk about the biggest mistake Nintendo ever made, and the evil they wrought on the industry as a result.
What would have been an obscure add-on for the Super Nintendo would go on to become the best selling line of home consoles of all time.
We also have a banner session of Caption this Crap!, as we read the most submissions we’ve ever received in a week.
Listen intently as Steve regales us with tales of the middle east, Ben corrects Nick’s flawed PSX knowledge, and the gang talks about the incredible response received from Retronick.com’s first ever infographic; not to mention the amazing work Louis has done on reformatting every article on the site (We’ve finally recovered from the crash!).
Drinking rules! Drink every time you can call bullshit on one of Nick’s Playstation factoids or Ben corrects him. Also start drinking and don’t stop until Steve finishes detailing how he’s made “hobo hooch”. Or, you could play it safe and engage in a soccer riot… Which is also something we wouldn’t recommend.

I too am not a fan of the PS3 controller. Though I’ve not tried it myself, a company called HDE makes a XBOX 360 to PS3 adapter. My friend owns one and has had no issues with using his Xbox 360 controller playing PS3 games. My biggest complaint with the PS3 is a lack of quality chat audio. I use a high quality gaming headset and the PlayStation’s audio sounds horrendous compared to the Xbox 360. The lack of being able to create a party outside of a game is a major drawback for me as well.

I never knew they made an adapter like that. Maybe if I did, I wouldn’t have sold my PS3. Ok, I probably would have even then, but still.
One of my biggest complaints about the system was the controller. The few games I played on the PS3 (Uncharted and God of War series) felt awkward and took a long time getting used to as I mainly game on my 360.

I think it’s hilarious that everyone’s got a problem with the PS3’s controller when they haven’t made any significant changes since the Dual Shock One was introduced (I didn’t like that thing much either).
I guess it’s not the shapes on the buttons so much as the feel of the thing in my hands that I’ve got a beef with. It’s also weird that this is the only console I know of that hasn’t strayed from the original controller design (save the addition of 2 analogue sticks).

All we knew years ago was the Dual Shock. Then the 360 controller came along and changed everything.
If I had to say one thing about the Dual Shock, it’s that it has no weight. It feels like a cheap piece of plastic in my hands.

Yep, my issue with the PS3 controller is tactile. I like the heft and feel of the bigger, manlier Xbox 360 controller. The button layout is not so much a concern because after a few hours of playing a particular game my finger movements are essentially autonomic.

My favorite TurboGrafx game was Military Madness. The XBL marketplace port failed to impress. The quality seemed sub par, or maybe it was a case of me being spoiled by modern HD audio/video gaming. I hope the latter is not the case. That would be kind of heartbreaking. Almost as bad as when a co-worker of mine said it was hard for him to truly appreciate the outdoors anymore because its brilliance, color, and clarity just didn’t match his sixty-five inch LED TV.

Military Madness is one game I never played much growing up. I rented it a few times, but I guess strategy wasn’t my thing back then. I keep meaning to grab a copy sooner or later, I know the price has been driven down with that HD port.

Full disclosure: I never owned a TurboGrafx. My best friend owned the system. I’m sure we played other games. I just remember enjoying Military Madness.

Nice. You should try Air Zonk if you ever get the opportunity. It’s available on the Virtual Console for less than a TG-16 and original copy of the game at least. Just don’t try Super Air Zonk (it sucks).

I believe Curtis Silver’s “Miracle Montana stain!” is a reference to one of the Doritos commercials played during the Super Bowl. http://youtu.be/YoOfBVraMNw

You’re right! What’s funny is that I saw that ad, but I couldn’t recall it when I read his caption. Money well spent Doritos! Definitely made little to no impact on me.
